Format locking

So i got my Table of contents to look like its supposed to. But i am having trouble locking the format so that when an update is preformed it dosent go back to the orginial format. I know im missing something small, but i cant figure it out.

CHAPTER 1 Introduction 1-1

Its small and dumb but I need it in there. How do I lock that chapter 1 so it will stay the way I change it to.

Ed,

You need to edit the reference page for the TOC. Specifically, the line that generates the entry for chapters. It should already have the building block <$pagenum>, or something similar, in it. Before this building block, add the building block <$chapnum>, the a hyphen or whatever character you want to separate them. This last building block is a placeholder for the chapter number. Then update your book.

If the numbering does not start at one and continue properly, then you need to set the chapter numbering from the book file. Right-click each chapter and select Numbering. Set the first chapter to start at 1, and the other chapters to continue from previous. Update the book.

That should do it.

Note that if the OTHER entries in the TOC use the same line in the reference page, you will have to create different tags for those "chapters" so that they have their own lines on the reference page, without the chapnum building block.

I got the refrence page to look the way i want.
<$paratext> <$pagenum>
<$paratext> <$chapnum>-<$pagenum>
How do i add a "tag" so that the second line wich is the chapter 1 line will stay in its place.

You'd follow the instructions in step 3 of the reply message in yesterday's thread....

"3. In the TOC file itself, paragraph tags with a TOC suffix control
the formatting of entries, just as they do in any other FM file.
That's where you set the leadering -- it's linked to a tab stop that
you need to create. The tags also control the indent of a particular
tag Heading1TOC, or Heading2TOC, for instance." And in your case, the space above or below your chapter entry.

The tag needs to be set up on the main body page of the TOC.

However, as noted by me and others in yesterday's thread, if you're generating the entries at the top of the TOC manually instead of letting the program do it for you, you need to make sure they're at the top of the text flow....

I understand the leadering and what have you the problem i am having is when i go into the refrence page and make the changes i need to, it does not make the changes to the Chapter 1 line. Both the lines are TitleTOC. I know i can make a new paragraph tag so that the line will be called something else. But when I do that and put it in the TOC. I cant change the refrence page format so that it will stay in the format i put it in. If im asking to much please let me know. Also is there any good book that teaches Framemaker from the begging for somebody who has never used it before.

I am a little unclear about what you did or are trying to do, but in the reference page, apply the SAME paragraph format to the line

<$paratext> <$chapnum>-<$pagenum>

as you want it to be in the TOC, that is, I think, TitleTOC. When you update the chapter lines will have the same paragraph format as applied in the reference page.

I restarted my TOC and it is coming out better. The only thing i got left is how do you create a space between lines and they keep during an update.

How about putting space above in the paragraph format for the Chapter TOC entry. Of course, this would put space above all chapter entries, which might be OK if each chapter includes subheadings in the TOC.
