I've upgraded from FrameMaker 11 to FrameMaker 2015 and some variables seem to have gotten corrupted.
This is an example of one of my variables in FrameMaker 11:
This is how that variable displays in FrameMaker 2015, with a huge gap between the first two words:
I've tried updating the character tags in the definition, substituting other character tags, and even rebooting my system, all with no solution. Is there a problem with variables in FM2015?
My operating system is Windows 7.64.
FrameMaker 2015 version 13.0.1.385.

First, apply the second patch to get your version up to 13.0.2.433.
The gap is coming from the space after the word "Vivia". Try moving it to before the "Hemodialysis" after the <Emphasis> tag.
Applying multiple character tags (e.g. <Emphasis>) isn't a recommended practise. Try using a single character tag that has both the bold and emphasis property.
Note: you can use </> instead of the <Default ¶ Font> tag to make the variable easier to read and maintain.

Thank you for your response. I didn't know there was a patch to FM2015.
I did try moving the space after <Emphasis> but that did not work. However, when I put the space between the <Default ¶ Font> and <Emphasis> it got rid of the gap.
Thanks for the tip about </>. I did not know that.

Hi Cathy,
Thanks for reporting the problem!
Can you please try following things:-
1) Apply the second patch to get your version up to 13.0.2.433 and then try again.
2) Enable "Use Asian composer" flag on the Asian tab of paragraph designer for the paragraph having space issue.
If it’s not working then please send the files to aggrawal@adobe.com , so that we can debug the issue.
Thanks,
Pankaj

Pankaj,
I applied the second patch, restarted, and tried again. It did not fix the gap.
I enabled "Use Asian composer" to the paragraph with the spacing problem. Yes, that worked. However, I would have to search through the 500 page manual to find every instance of that variable, and that would be very time consuming.
Instead, I moved the space between the <Default ¶ Font> and <Emphasis> tags and imported the Variables back into all the other chapters. That fixed this particular problem.
I'm just concerned that I still understand why the gap is appearing and how to eliminate the possibility of it occurring in the future.
I will send you a file.
