FrameMaker 9: Deleting Variables

Is there a location to put known issues in Frame 9? Every time I try to delete some extra variables, on the 3rd one, Frame gives a fatal error and crashes. It doesn't matter which three, but it is the third one every time I have tried it.

There isn't a specific place in this forum, as far as I know, unfortunately.

Have you tried the recently released (last week or so) patch? It's available either from within FM's Help menu or through the Downloads section of the Adobe website.

You might also want to post your report on the Framers list, as that gets a very wide audience:

http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers

(please do specify which patch version of FM you're using)

I am having the same issue. I am running 9.0p196, which should be the latest.

I would also like to know if there is any way to delete multiple variables at the same time, or all unused variables.

Tom,

Actually, 9.0p230 (aka 9.0.1) is the latest version.

I just tried deleting a number of variables from a sample file that
contains hundreds and I get no errors.

Can any of you describe step-by-step (how selected, which pod/panel,
which icons clicked, etc.) how you're deleting the deleting the
variables?

Ok, spoke too soon. I was at about 50 variables on deletion when I
got FM to crash. Not nice - definite bug.

Please file a Bug report at the link provided.

I will file the bug, but just so the info is here as well...

In the Variable Pod, I select a variable and click the Delete icon. The first time works fine...sometimes the second and third, as well. Sometimes I get weird behavior after deleting the first variable. I select one, click Delete and a different one further down the list gets deleted.

I've never been able to delete a fourth variable successfully. FM crashes.

The only work-around I've found is to save the document after each delete.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Tom, I was deleting them the same as you and I am on the most current version. I updated in fact due to this hoping that it had been fixed. For now I will try saving between each deletion, but this is for sure a nuisance 🙂

Thanks for everyone's replies validating the bug.

Pls try this as an intermediary way out for this issue:

1. Refresh the Variable pod (Refresh icon or CTRL + l [small L]) after each delete. CTRL + l works for Pods when the focus is in its list view. Its easier to use CTRL + l in conjunction with Del Key.

2. Or Delete variables in descending alphabetically sorted list. i.e. Delete variables in reverse alphabetical manner z, y, x, .. c, b, a.

What is the error you are getting? And is anyone getting a 9004 error? and if so what are you doing to get that error?

Amit...thanks for your work-around.

I have found that if you simply click outside the pod, on the doc for example, and then back in the pod, it accomplishes the same thing. For me it was faster than the ctrl-l.
