Since yesterday I have not been able to open book files. Whenever I try, the program shuts down with an error. The other files open without problems.
Has anybody else experienced this problem?
I installed the latest patch, but this did not help.
Thank you for your help!
You can try renaming the pref folder.
This little exercise will reset FrameMaker to "factory settings" and create a new folder called "17". It may - or may not - help, but should you reace Adobe Support, this is one of the possible fixes they will put you through.

Where are the .book files?
Local machine, enterprise network, CMS server, cloud?
Can you open a troublesome .book with Notepad?
If will be gibberish, but will confirm that it's not a file system problem.
(and I don't suppose that .MIFs were being kept for the projects)
Just as an experiment, if you can open the .fm files, can you make a new .book, close it and open it?

Thank you for your answer. I tried several different books - I work with FrameMaker more or less every day and therefore am quite surprised that it now behaves differently. I have not had this kind of problem before.
The files are kept on the same PC as the program itself.
Do you know whether it is possible to contact Adobe directly?

Did you try the Notepad test?
Did you try to create a new .book?
re: Do you know whether it is possible to contact Adobe directly?
Other than for installation/licensing questions, no.
It probably requires a support contract for app tech support questions, and I know nothing about those (and never needed one in 30+ years of using FM).
Even via that route, their first question is apt to be: so what changed?
This strikes me as more likely a local IT issue than an Adobe IT issue.

Thanks again.
I tried the Notebook test, it was okay.
I did not create a new book - I have got hundreds of book files that worked fine in the past.
As far as I know I have not changed anything. I suppose I will have to re-install the program.

If you can (or cannot) create a new deminimus book, that could be useful info.
I presume you've tried rebooting the machine.
(I have seen one instance of the networking stack on Win11 getting into an odd state that required a reboot. A similar problem with the filesystem stack wouldn't surprise me.)

Well, I rebooted the PC after installing the patch and again now.
When I try to create a new book or open an existing book, the program crashes...

Worth a try.
I seem to recall that there is some local / localization / temp / roaming directory that is worth deleting or renaming, and just restarting FM, but I don't recall and can't find the details. Perhaps one of the other old hats can clarify.

Thank you - you have the correct idea. This is the solution as stated by FrameMaker-DK.

Hi Bjørn, thank you very much. This is the solution! I am more than grateful for your help. I was getting a bit desperate. This has been the first major problem with FrameMaker after working with this program (as a translator) for more than 20 years.
