How do I get Import > Object to embed an Excel file (FM10)?

FrameMaker 10, Acrobat X Pro, Windows 7

When I embed an Excel file or a PDF file in FM10 then Print to PDF or Save  As PDF, all I get is a lifeless icon in the resulting PDF -- ie, cannot launch the embedded file from the icon.

My procedure:

1. File > Import > Object

2. In the Insert Object dialog box:

     a) Create from File > Browse. Select XLS or PDF file.

     b) Tick Display As Icon.

     c) Click OK.

Massive icon appears in anchored frame. Scaling icon to 75% or  100% makes it a useable size.

3. Print FM file to PDF, or Save As PDF. (Both methods produce dead icon.)

Any ideas?

Mark,

It's not clear what you're trying to accomplish. Do you want the Excel and PDF files to display on the current page in the FM created PDF or do you want to create a link that launches/opens the respective files?

To have the files display, simply import by reference.

To create links, use the Hypertext commands to insert a "message openfile filename" hypertext marker to trigger an application launch for whatever is associated with the "filename" at the system level.

... cannot launch the embedded file from the icon.

Unless you absolutely must have what OLE promises, but rarely delivers (and often later forgets), there are more elegant ways to get spreadsheet content into Frame documents.

For example: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3917580#3917580

Thanks for your input guys.

Looks like the "message openfile filename" hypertext marker method will do the job.

I got excited when I saw the topic title "Embedding Objects" in the FM10 help, and when FM10 allowed me to select an XLS file via File > Import > Object.

Now I see that I was misled.

Thanks again.
