How to find and change paragraph tags in a Framemaker Book

Participant ,
Jun 22, 2019 Jun 22, 2019

Hi All,

Does Framemaker allow 'find and change' of paragraph tags at a book level?

For example, can I replace 'Heading1' with a different paragraph tag like 'Heading 1 with indent', throughout the book?

The Find/Change menu,  in the drop-down menu under 'Find' section, allows selection of Paragraph Tag along with a text line where one can specify the Tag. However in the 'Change' section of the Find/Change menu, one cannot find a similar drop-down selection for the new Paragraph Tag.

So how are paragraph tags changed throughout the book?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

Hi apuwdm2:

If you'd like to stay within the FrameMaker feature set, you can.

  1. Assign 'Heading 1 with indent" to a single paragraph
  2. With your cursor still in that paragraph, choose Edit > Copy Special > Paragraph Format
  3. Edit > Find/Change:
    1. Find Heading1
    2. Change: By Pasting
    3. Look in: Book

Because so many things can be copied to the clipboard, By Pasting greatly extends FrameMaker's Find/change capabilities.

FrameMaker can't copy table styles for use in the Find / Replace by Pasting routine described by Barbara.

You have two choices:

  • Use Find (Table Tag: your table style name) to find each table of that style, then use the Table Catalog to apply the new style.
  • Buy Rick Quatro's FindChangeFormatsBatch plugin, which lets you change lots of things automatically.

Ah… thanks. Not the first time I posted a broken link in this forum because of that pre-entered "http://" content in the link entry field which isn't automatically overwritten when pasting a link.

The script was written for FM 2015. Has anyone tried it with FM 2019?

I thought one of the points of ExtendScript was that a script written in it could be used with multiple versions of FM without having to be rewritten?

That link has changed again, by the way. The post is now here:

I haven't tried to use it with FM2019, but I have Rick Quatro's  script which does all those things and also handles Master Pages and Reference Pages.

Hi,

How to find a particular table style and replace it with another table style?

I have a book full of tables that have a 'table title' on the top, but I need a table style without any title. So, how do I find the old table style in the book and replace it with another?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Apurva: wouldn't it be quickest just to redefine the table style to remove the table title? Then you can import the new table style defintion into the other book documents.

Check out Silicon Prairie add ons. I have the Paragraphs tool and it does an amazing job of replacing of replacing styles.

Basically you set up a conversion document in Framemaker with a table. The left column lists the tag to search for and the right column lists the tag to replace it with. It is well worth the $10 investment!

Hoping its okay to put in a plug for the software.
