How to remove registered symbol R from FM document

Engaged ,
Apr 02, 2024 Apr 02, 2024

I am trying to remove the registered symbol from FM TOC, but unable to do that. When I generate TOC, this registered symbol R (big and bold one) appears in the TOC line. Please suggest any idea how to remove it.

Hi Amit:

Thank you for sharing your screen shot. I see two answers to this question.

As per Jeff and Matt: when we create a new character style, we (almost) always want to choose Set Window to As Is from the Commands menu in the lower left corner of that panel (the gear icon), which makes Fm forget everything about the selection and only do exactly what you tell it. If we don't do that, the character style picks up everything from the selected paragraph (i.e., Verdana 18) and that becomes pa

Have a look at the topic page that it's referencing - it looks like a product name, which I suspect may be in the form of a variable to make for easier product renaming. I bet the registered symbol is part of that variable construction.

Building on what Jeff noted, I'm guessing that the character tag applied to the registered trademark symbol is the same size in the TOC that it is in your document.

If so, use the Character Designer to reduce the font size stored in the character tag present in your TOC.

Here's a snap of the Character Designer, and of course your style names and options will differ, but my preference would be to have most properties set to the As Is setting.

I got it, registered symbol is taken from source page but with bigger size than normal. But I don't know why a large size registered symbol appear when generating TOC. Here is what I am taking in source page:

As Jeff suggests, start by seeing what's actually on the source page used to generate that ToC content.

Depending on document vintage, the ® might be in-line text, or a Variable.
If a Variable, make sure the same definition is used in both *source.fm and *ToC.fm

The character codepoint might also be
U+00AE (\u00ae) native Unicode, or
legacy \xd2 with Character Format ‹Symbol› applied.
It would be worth replacing with Unicode, if legacy codepage/overlay coding is in use.

And in any case there might be a Character Format applied. If so, see what you can do to avoid that, beause ChFmts break hypertext in generated content.

Hi Amit:

And there are two in your screenshot. A normal size one, and then the very large one. Remember a table of contents is just a list of paragraphs so definitely take a look at the source text. If you don't understand what you are seeing, you can share it with us.

Here is what at the source page, but when I generate TOC, registered symbol appear in very large size. For now, I have manually deleted a large size registered symbol, but please suggest me solution how can I generate TOC (free from text size variation) with superscript format.

I suspect that Matt's answer to set the properties mostly to "As Is" will cause it to behave better.

Select the large character on the body page of your toc. Use the character designer to change the point size to what you need.

Did adjusting the Registered character tag in the Character Designer solve the problem?

If we don't do that, the character style picks up everything from the selected paragraph (i.e., Verdana 18) and that becomes part of the style definition and that limits its use elsewhere. This is one of those things you need training to know—it's not at all intuitive for someone teaching themselves FrameMaker. You can fix this now by opening up the chapter with the title that you showed us:

  1. Open Character Designer
  2. Choose your superscript character style from the list at the top
  3. Commands > Set Window to As is (or tap SH F8).
  4. Only enable Superscript and Update Style.
  5. Import this character style to the other chapters in your book, including the TOC chapter.
  6. Update your book.

This is the right way to fix it.

If you are under a deadline, there is a quicker way: in the TOC file, open Format > Document > Text Options. Reduce the size of the superscript (i.e., 40%) and the offset (i.e., 20%). This will target all superscript characters is that one file and make them smaller and adjust their vertical position. This is quicker, but if you import document properties to the other files in your book, it will then target all superscript characters in every file, and will impact your titles, too.
