Inconsistent Numbering properties in FrameMaker Book

Explorer ,
Aug 16, 2024 Aug 16, 2024

Hi, I have an issue with numbering in a book. I had to change chapter numbering from 4 to 2, which in principle was working. I followed this navigation:

Format --> Document --> Numbering --> Chapter --> Chapter Number,  and changed the chapter number from, 4 to 2 for the complete book.

It did not work for the numbering in the table of content and the page numbering in the body file. In both, it still is "4"

I've read [other posts] and see that my "Format" tab does not provide the "Pagination" option. Although I use the German language version of FM, I think I should have found it by now after trying all the obvious options.

Grateful for any help!

Hi Beate,

did you update the book after you changed the numbering?

Pagniation option is a little bit tricky, because it depends on the current selection:

If the book is selected:

If an opened file is selected:

If a file is selected in the book:

 Could that help you?

You can use "Pagination" only if a opened file ist selected:

Pagination options for paragraphs are in the Paragraph designer:

Hi Andreas,

no, sorry, that doesn't solve it. The issue I have is with "numbering/Nummerierung", not with "Seitenumbruch".

Its a pure numbering issue. I see that "pagination" is a tricky term in English.

The issue remains. I have set all options that have to do with numbering from "4" to "2", but the numbering issue in the table of content remains.

Hi Beate,

It would have been better to start a new thread ...

Do all the numberings use the Chapnum variable? You can also use regular paragraph numbering without this variable. Or other variables. This would explain, why the numbering is not changed.

Best regards, Winfried

Excellent observation, Winfried, I've split this to a new thread!

Hi Beate,

seems, that the chapnum in the page numbers is updated from 4 to 2. From your image I don't know how your toc entries are numbered. Can you send a screenshot from the reference page for the toc? Is there a paranum for each entry? Or is the numbering in the paragraph formats for each level?

Ref page for my toc (paranums only for chapters and sections --> level ordering is an obscure FM thing ;-))

Are you using either the chapnum and volnum variables? It looks like it would help to use either or both to acheive what you are looking for.

If that sounds uncomfortable, you may need to set up some user variables to control the organization and numbering.

Hi @Beate5E27:

This is a conundrum—it appears that the chapter numbers are updating correctly in front of the TOC entries but not in front of the page numbers for the same paragraph.

This will be most easily solved if you can share the one file and the TOC so that we can exactly how this was set up (feel free to save a copy of the file and remove all content, except for the few headings showin in your screen shot). You can put the files on a file sharing server like dropbox and post a link here (public) or message me directly (private). You can also send it to my email: barb at rockymountaintraining dot com.

There are quite a few combinations of manual numbering, auto-number building blocks and variables, and it will take a fair amount of time and multiple screen shots from you to see all of the possiblities and figure this out. Sharing the files will give you the quickest response.
