Hi there,
I've been having a problem with PDFs generated from documents created in Frame 9 missing random blocks of text. From reading the forum, I see that this is a well known issue. I've tried both the MS hotfix and deleting the fntcache.dat file. Deleting the fntcache.dat file is the only thing that has worked. Has anyone else run the hotfix without any positive results? Am I doomed to deleting fntcache each time I want to create a PDF?
Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks!
Jeff

In order to provide insights, it would be helpful to the group denizens if you'd provide system and environment details....
OS, RAM, FM and Acrobat versions / patch levels, network environment, whether the Adobe PDF printer is the system default, etc.

I think the current fm patch level is p250, so you're behind there.
So start with applying the patches from the update page....

Jeff,
Are you by any chance using any of the OTF Pro/W1G/COM type of fonts? Are you also using CMYK PDF generation? If so, then this is a known bug. Try disabling the CMYK generation by enabling the "Convert CMYK colors to RGB" in the PDF Setup window.

Well, the known bug with many of these fonts is: text is displayed with the TimesNewRoman font. I didn't have missing text blocks using them, and I'm not aware of anybody else who has.
The MS patch should definitely work. It does work here on all machines (all running Windows XP Pro SP2(!)). I know of some other font related problems with XP SP3.
If it still doesn't work: deleting the fntcache.dat is not necessary for each PDF, it's necessary once a day. The daily procedure in this case is:
- Start your PC
- Delete the fntcache.dat
- Reboot
Now PDF creation works as expected, until you reboot again. If you have to do this for whatever reason, delete the fntcache.dat again before rebooting.

For what it is worth...
I must be leading a very charmed life, because I have never had to delete the fntcache.dat file.
I am using FrameMaker 9.0.3, running on Windows XP 2002, SP 3.

Well, it's not difficult to get this "charmed life". You just have to keep the number of installed fonts as low as possible, and should not use large (in terms of megabytes) CJK and Unicode fonts. As long as the size of the fntcache.dat doesn't exceed a certain size (usually about 1.5 MB, but lower limits have been reported), the bug won't strike.

If you apply the Windows patch successfully, you shouldn't need to do anything with regards to the font cache file and you shouldn't have any problems with large numbers of fonts or CJK fonts. I'm running over 1600 typefaces without any problems.
