making underscores

Community Beginner ,
Aug 28, 2024 Aug 28, 2024

Good afternoon,

I am in the process of re-creating a Word document in Framemaker.

Below is a snap shot of a feature in Word that I need to repulicate.
I don't know what it is called, so I will describe it:

it is a paragraph that has an underscore line, next to the text.
Text is then typed over the underscore line, like 'abc'.

Can you do this in Framemaker?

Thank you, Vicki

You can use multiple underscore (Shift –) or better yet, a right align tab with a leader line.

Hi Vicki!

No, that is isn't a FrameMaker feature, and as an aside, frequently it's better to just abandon the Word formatting and redesign your files as you make the Word to FrameMaker transition.

I can think of two work-arounds, but neither is perfect. You could get somewhat close by underlining the words and adding underlined spaces but the right side of the lines won't line up correctly if you use spaces and not tabs. Or use a table.

Hey Dave, I was slow it click the post button because I was messing around with the options but I started with your idea and couldn't make the words retain an underline that lines up seamlessly with the underscore leader. What am I missing?

No--The underscore would only work for a PDF or print form. Not something that you would fill out in frame itself.

ah, that is the phrase I was looking for:  'words retain an underline'.

The work around was a table, but I have a graphic that the paragraphs runs around out to the right side, so it is complicating things.

Thank you, it helps to know that I can do that underline in Framemaker.
