managing table titles in FrameMaker 12 does not work

Community Expert ,
Mar 20, 2014 Mar 20, 2014

I have a mysterious problem in FrameMaker 12. When creating a table I am not able to move the table title. When changing the setting to below or above or whatever and pressing Apply nothing happens. The feature works allright in FrameMaker 11. I have tried with both existing and new documents and the it doesn't matter. I can not do anything with the title position of tables.

Are anybody else expiriencing the same problem ?

regards

Bjørn

Bjørn,

You say that you select the table anchor and then try changing the properties. Try placing the cursor in one of the table cells first and then see if it behaves any differently.

I have no problem on FM-12 with this.

To veryfy:

- insert a new table of format A somewhere

- CTRL+t opens the table designer (if not open anyway)

- switch the location of the table title and use Apply

If this works for You then the table with the problem may be crooked:

- save the document as MIF

- close the document without saving

- open the mif document

- save it as FM to overwrite the crooked one

Still the same problem?

- convert the table to text (paragraphs)

- convert the paragraphs to table

Still not OK?

- now I'm hapless

Bjørn,

It works just fine for me too. Have you applied the 12.0.1 patch?

Hi Arnis and Klaus

Thanks for your answers.

I am running FrameMaker 12.0.1.331 on 64 bit windows 7. I had the newest patch before asking.

I have tried Klaus's tricks and it still does not work. I have also tried on a clients computer running XP, and it does not work there either.

I insert the table in a new document. Select the table anchor. Juggle the Title settings and press Apply. Nothing happens. Trying to Update All yield the same result. I can manage to make it work using the Global Update option, but that is not a practical solution.

regards

Bjørn

Hi Arnis

That did it. Setting the cursor inside a table cell makes the table editor work. It is a little weird though. Selecting the anchor works in all other previous versions of FrameMaker, but not in version 12. Do you get the same results as me when selecting the anchor and try to change title properties ?

Hi Bjørn,

Yes, I can confirm that the FM12 behaviour is different. I actually hadn't noticed until you suggested this as I usually have place the cursor in the table for any work on it through the Designer. It's definitly an inconsistency with prior versions.

Was the feature ever documented as an alternative way to edit a single table?

In the FM7 Help, using a selected table anchor to edit table properties is only documented for selecting multiple table anchors and using Global Update, which apparently still works in FM12 as historically documented.

I don't think it ever was officially documented as the Help for reformatting tables since FM8 states:

To redefine a table format:

1. Click in a table whose format you want to redefine, and choose Table > Table Designer. If the table you click in has format overrides, these overrides--not the catalog format's definition--appear in the Table Designer.

It does seem odd though that in FM12 with the table selected via the anchor, the Designer does show any overrides applied, yet one cannot apply the override this way. Something has changed and it may be an unintended side-effect of something else. What the overall implication for this is unknown, but the programming team should be made aware of this.

Thanks to both you for participating. I generally like the road Adobe has taken with FrameMaker, even though I wish they would try to find a better solution to the programs many features than the bloody mess (IMHO) of toolbars, pods and palettes. In that respect I miss FM7.
