I am using FrameMaker 11.
I had a FrameMaker crash. As a result, three .fm files in my book became .mif files.
I saved the .mif files as .fm files, and then re-imported them into the book.
After I close out of the book overnight, the .fm files revert to .mif files.
How can I permanently make the .fm extension stick?

Try opening the MIF files in FM, then do a Save As .fm files

Hey Jeff, alas, I tried that and it didn't work. The file still shows as a .MIF despite the Save As, and then closing and reopening the book.

Are you showing full extensions of file types in Explorer? You may have created something that looks like filename.mif.fm or filename.fm.mif
The other possibility is that the files are too damaged to be recognized as FM files, in which case you would need to revert to a backup.

Hello, I believe I am showing full extensions in Explorer. I took screen shots to show what displays in Windows and what displays in my book.
To explain further: when I deleted the original .MIF file, and used a backup file, and then replaced the .MIF file in the book with the new .FM book, the file successfully changed to .FM. But, after leaving at the end of the day, and reopening my project, the corrected files reverted to .fm.

Any Source Control at play here?

I'm using VSS ... but it's only for backup. I leave the working source files on a shared directory.

I'm not sure if this is what you are seeing, but there is a bug in the
Save As dialog that doesn't properly change the extension on MIF files
saved as FM (but works fine for saving FM as MIF). See this thread:

You could also try creating three new FM files and adding them to your book.
Save. Open them.
One by one, open the MIF files, select all Ctrl-a, copy Ctrl-c, and paste
Ctrl-v into one of the new FM files. Save both files. Repeat for the other
two files.
Save everything in site, close FM and reopen the book file and the three
new files.
If everything looks OK, remove the MIF files from the book and leave the
three new FM files.
Rename as needed.
I would not delete the MIF/corrupted files, just in case....
