Missing Times font error/warning message

New Here ,
Sep 28, 2009 Sep 28, 2009

I've been getting a warning message the the Times font could not be found and Times New Roman is replacing it. I've never added Times to the FrameMaker templates, so I'm not sure where it's finding this font. I checked the References pages and it appears that they already use Times New Roman.

I had also had a problem with FM saying that Arial Black isn't available (even though it's installed on my computer). But once I double-clicked on the font file, it seemed to recognize the Arial Black was available.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Barry

I get the same message in the FrameMaker Console when it starts up with the SetPrint plug-in. I've never taken a close look as to where it's picking up "Times" font and just ignore it.

There are two slightly different things gong on with these two font problems, I think.

First, it's generally thought to be a FM Best Practice to use the Adobe PDF instance as your default system printer. If you can't, for some reason, there's a free plug-in that will automatically do this just for Frame. Doing this prevents Frame from using fonts that are physically in the printer, but not installed on your system, and not transportable with the document (and can't be embedded in PDFs). And conversely, makes sure that FM uses system fonts. So that may fix some of these problems.

That said, if you're sure your system is set up properly, the Time font you may be missing is likely to be buried deep in some Frame files and is being used internally on Reference or Master pages. If you modify your Preferences so that Remember Missing Fonts is NOT activated, open and save the problem files, your available fonts should be substituted.

Arial Black is a slightly different problem, but you can do the same Preferences trick to clean it up. Or, fix the problem, created with XP SP3 changed the fonts.... http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71801

Cheers,

Art

Adding a little bit to Art's thoughts...

Sometimes a font can be remain in a document as chaff or dirt. Maybe at one time it formatted some text, the text was deleted, but the font entry was not. I have saved files as mif, opened them in NotePad, found the font reference and deleted it. This can be tiresome if you have a lot of files with this problem. If you know that the missing font is not being used in any content of significance, you can do as Art suggests: turn OFF remember missing fonts, let Frame do the substitution, and save the file. At some point, you can turn the preference back on to make sure nothing important is corrupted. This approach is easier than trying to hunt down one or two inoccuous font entries.

I initially suspected that my problem was due to some debris in my master/reference pages (since I didn't create them - they came from a consultant's FM7 install (I think that was their version?)), but this message occurs for me in a separate console window just when I launch FM9 for the first time, so I don't think it has even had a chance to load up any docs yet. There maybe something in my maker.ini that's talking about "Times" font, but I haven't bothered to take the time to track it down as it doesn't seem to be hurting anything in my books & docs.

Art,

I found this topic today after searching for missing font topics.

I have been getting errors while distilling from PS to PDF (Frame 7.2) and it's usually like this:

%%[ Warning: Times-Roman not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded.]%%

The errors also mention other Times variants ans well as Helvetica and Helvetica Bold, none of which I ever use to my knowledge.

I checked my preferences and it is already set to NOT remember missing fonts.

I tried to find a font using character format in the find box but it found nothing.

If  searching the MIF file is the only other alternative, when I find the Times font, what exactly do you delete?

Yours,

Michael F

You don't delete. You either:

  • use the found instance to identify the source object, and fix the source object in the document, or
  • change instances of <FFamily `Times'> and <FPostScriptName `Times[varies]'> to the font you have.

And you may not find anything. Font references can sneak in with imported objects that can encode fonts, such as DWG, DXF, EPS, PDF and possibly SVG. In these cases, you need to fix the external object (which usually means changing the font, embedding it, or converting it to outlines).
