I have a book containing many .fm files, which is a complete manual. I'd like to also create PDFs from specific collections of these same .fm files, where each PDF is to address a specific user type. However, I'd like each PDF to be able to continue to use the cross-references that link to what will now be a location in a separate PDF. For example, I would have a general info PDF and both the user PDF and the admin PDF would need to be able to link into the information in the general info PDF. How would I set this up? Thanks for any tips.

I don't know if the "book of books" concept would work for you in this sort of thing.

Remember that books are just pointers to FrameMaker documents. You could have a book for each user type. When you make your PDFs, make sure both .book files are open in FrameMaker and the cross-book links should work in your PDFs.

If your final output are 2 separate pdf files residing on a server, where they link to one another, I believe you will need full url's in your links. You can work with books in books in FrameMaker and output them as 1 pdf file and have them link to each other within that single pdf, using for instance, cross references, but 2 separate PDF's will require hyperlinks and full urls, I believe.
