I use FrameMaker daily, and at the Custom Ruling and Shading function, I have conflicts, causing a critical error 16014 to appear on screen and then abruptly closing the program.
Does anyone know what causes this, and what you can do about it?

Has this just started to happen? Or has it always been going on? Does it happen with any doc or only specific ones? Have you applied all patches to your FM2020 version?

The latest 2020 version is 16.0.5.1096. Try choosing Help > Updates and see if you can get the latest.

Is this happening every time you use Custom Ruling/Shading?
To test, please try using Custom R/S in a new, blank portrait document.
If that fails, it sounds like resetting prefs would help. See https://techcommtools.com/find-framemaker-preference-folder/
If you can use the feature in a blank document, it's either a corruption in the Fm file or in the table itself.
Try converting the table to paragraphs, then converting back into a table. If that doesn't work, try copying all your content into a new document and importing formats as needed.

If this happens only in a specific file and not in the default template (not yours or your company's, but the FrameMaker default template), you can also do a MIF wash:
Save the file as MIF.
Then save the MIF file back as FM.
This can often remove any conflicts in a file.
