I am in the process up upgrading my Technical Communication Suite from 1 to 3. Here's my problem:

I have a client whose documentation set I update a couple of times a year. They are using FM 7. Up until now this hasn't been a problem, I download their docs from their server, work on them in FM 8, then save them as version 7 before uploading them back to their server.

Just installed Tech Comm 3 on my laptop, and I notice it only saves back to version 9 as FM files.

The obvious solution, of course, the client upgrades to version 10, but just in case they won't convince, I need a solution. The two I see, I work on it via the remote server (can we say SLOWWWW torture?), or, the couple of times a year I work on their updates, I uninstall Tech Comm 3, reinstall Tech Comm 1, then, when I finish, uninstall 1 and reinstall 3.

I'm not keen on either solution. Any suggestions, workarounds? I notice FM 10 does save as a version 7 mif file. Will this work?

Thanks!

Jo Byrd

Yes you could save as MIF but watch out for any Unicode that you might use in FM10, that's not supported in FM7.

Thanks, Jeff, that's good to know.

Since most of what I do is copy/paste from a Word doc containing the updates, that shouldn't be a problem...although I might run it through NotePad just to be on the safe side! Don't have to do a Paste Special that way.

You know there's a trick you can make to your maker.ini file so that you can copy & paste text from Word without bringing in any Word styles, etc. It makes your Paste act like a Paste Special - text only command.

You just need to find the line that talks about ClipboardFormatsPriorities= rearrange it to make it read TEXT first in the list.

Jeff, you are my hero!

Thank you for telling me that, it'll make my life SO much easier!

I'm not anything approaching a guru in Fm, journeyman is more like it. Just don't have the opportunity to work in FM very often. Unfortunately. Meaning, I really appreciate the experts who contribute to this forum and help me when I start hitting my head against a wall.

This is not a response to Saving as past version. I have my own question but

am unable to post it. How do I post my question? I am logged to the forum but do not see any button to post the question.
