Setting up numbering for figures to recognize Heading 1

Participant ,
Mar 06, 2021 Mar 06, 2021

My sections are based on Heading 1. The image attached shows a figure under the third time a Heading 1 appears. So I want the figure tag to increment accordingly. 3-1, 3-2, etc. How do I get the figure tag to recognize the section by Heading 1 (and also reset when the next heading comes along?

Is H1 auto-numbered?
If so, and I understand the question, perhaps change the key <> to <$paranumonly[Heading1]>

Your answer sounded logical but still no luck.fmhead1.png

I realize I left off the "only" but did not make a difference.

BTW this is a single FM file for all of those Heading 1's.

Actually, it wasn't logical. That construct I proposed is for Cross-References, not auto-numbers. Sorry.

What is the AN for the Heading 1?

What happens if you replace the <$chapnum> with <> in the Figure AN?

How about <n>?
I haven't used these in some time, as you can likely guess.

<> instructs to not display.

IMHO the definition for your figure numbering should be

H:Figure <n>.< >< ><n+>:

Well I spoke too soon.

It seems the Heading 2, 3, 4 affects the Figure numbering.

I also have tables to autonumber but when I have a 3-1 figure, the first table after that gets its cue from the figure and makes the first table to be 3-2. 😞

So I know we are closer.

nrvphotography: It seems the Heading 2, 3, 4 affects the Figure numbering.

Well, we'd need to see the AN expressions for those as well.

Possible Counter Series Label [H] oversights aside, there could be some unintended resetting or incrementing going on in the string of <counters><counters><counters>.

Klaus,

Would it be too much trouble to ask you to map it out if there was a FOURTH heading with figures and tables? I have tried to follow your logic but just cannot get it.

Thank you very much!

I think this should work:

  1. Add another row called 4heading underneath 3heading.
  2. Add another column called 4head to the right of 3head.
  3. 4heading row will be (horizontally): <n>., <n>., <n>., <n+>, < >, < >\t.
  4. The new 4head column will be (vertically): < =0>, < =0>, < =0>, <n+>, < >, < >

Basically, you need to go into each of the tags listed and add a placeholder (either =0 or n) in the position that controls the numbers for the 4th heading. The columns tell you when to restart a level's numbering, and the rows give you the codes to enter in the Autonumber field.
