How can I structure a table so that the heading continues on each page? I know this should be easy....but can't find this in the help files. Using FM9 in Windows.

Thanks,

Make certain that the headers are actually in a header row, not a body row of the table. This is a common problem importing Word tables.

Use the Table > Add Rows or Columns and select Row and "To Heading" from the drop down list on the right.

If you have a lot of these to fix, you might want toi consider getting Rick Quatro's TableCleaner plug-in at: http://www.frameexpert.com/plugins/tablecleaner/index.htm

diagnostics pic.jpgThe tables that I am using are from Interleaf....and I want go into how they are setup there.

..but I am going to have to start from scratch and make

a table that places the heading row on consecutive pages as needed. How do I define the first row as a

header row.....and that row will start on each page as typing? Attached is a picture. I was going to attach a pdf...but don't see a

way to do that.

Thanks,

If you've imported any type of table and are having a problem with it, I'd suggest defining the table and then Table > Convert to Paragraphs.

Then recreate the table by defining the paragraphs and doing Table > Convert to Table.

At that point, you should have a frame table set up that includes Heading Rows that repeat.

Thanks.....but I am not importing...I am just going to start from scratch. I can't figure out how to first make the first row the table header and second how to get it to repeat on each page....just like excel or any other program.

Thanks again...

If you're starting from scratch: Table> Insert table. The dialog box lets

you specify how many rows will be header rows. The header rows repeat

automatically if the table flows across multiple pages.

here is a step by step, the same as would be for making any new table (may be a repeat of advice in earlier postings):

  1. put cursor in a paragraph (preferably an empty paragraph, and one with a paragraph tag that you use only for anchoring tables, e.g. called "tableAnchor" or something.
  2. From the menu, choose Table > Insert Table. Use the default "Format A". Notice that there's a box that says "Heading rows". Be sure there is "1" in this row
  3. Click "insert"
  4. et voila, a blank table with a heading row.

When the table has enough rows for it to span to the next page(s), the heading row will be automagically repeated on any new page.

When you highlight a cell in a heading row (this can only be done on the *first* page of the table), notice that FM will select ALL the rows in that column. That's a sure-fire way to know that the row is indeed defined as a heading row.

If you need to,  format this table as desired. When you're finished, select the whole table by highlighting the table anchor (or searching for the table, whatever works best for you), then in the Table designer click on Apply and then Update All. Be sure to do Update All, as this is the only way to ensure that the changes you've made will be stored in the document's table catalog and will thus be applied to any new table using that same format.

To save this table design as a new, user-defined format, click anywhere in the table, then open the Table designer, and in the bottom left Commands dropdown, select "New Format" and enter a new table format name.

====

If you are starting from an existing table format that does NOT have the first row defined as a heading row, you can highlight the first row of the table, then do Add > Rows, select Rows, and use the dropdown to select "To Heading".

Then, if need be, copy the content of the old first row into the heading row, or retype it into the new heading row -- it's often easier to do this cell-by-cell because copying a body row into a heading row can be tricky.
