TROUBLE IMPORTING MP4 FILE INTO MY FRAMEMAKER DOCUMENT

Hi Guys, apologies if I am either on the wrong thread or if this question has already been asked.

I am trying to import a 3.66MB video file into my frame doc.

When I perform file/import/file, and locate the video (housed on one of my local work drives), then click import I get a window saying 'Unknown File Type' and get asked to convert from a long list of file types - but MP4 isn't shown?

What do I have to convert to? Any ideas at all. I have been using FrameMaker for years and this ought to be a simple process (and I'm hopeful that it is), so I maybe missing something here?

Please advise. Thank you - Barry

I've moved this post into the Framemaker Support Community. Hopefully someone here will be able to help.

What version of FM are you running? Are you all patched up? Check Help > Updates to check.

Hi Jeff, thanks for getting back so quickly.

FrameMaker 7.2. Should be all patched-up I guess as being Siemens we ought to be up-to-speed you would think?

Check help/updates on where Jeff?

FM7.2?? Wow, no wonder it's not liking mp4's - they were invented a long time after FM7.2 was out! What's the output going to be? Maybe you can create a link to the file.

Ha We will be moving to cortona in the near future, but for now we are having to stick with our 7.2 version.

Output will be a linked PDF uploaded to our corporate portal.

I've shutdown my laptop now but can send a link to a dummy Frame file. Can't send a working file for obvious reasons Jeff.

Thanks for your replies and I'll pick this up again in the morning.

No, I mean create a hyperlink to the mp4 video instead of trying to bring it into your FM content.

Still no luck guys!

As we are not thinking of updating FrameMaker (moving to Cortona3D), it might be a dead duck?

If you're not planning on upgrading (you know you're using an ancient version, right?), I think your only solution is to monkey around with the PDF output outside of FM.

Yeah, I've gathered that we are a number of versions behind. Were we to stick with FrameMaker then we'd obviously upgrade. But as we are in the process of moving to Cortona3D there's no point.

This little exercise was like a pilot, dummy run to illustrate how we are moving forward with out docs by incorporating in-line videos.

Really appreciate your input to this Jeff - many thanks,

I've been doing that with mine by using hyperlinks in the text, directing them to the YouTube channel where the video is hosted - you can condition the link to open in a new tab too (I create WebHelp with my FM content) by adding commands to the hyperlink in FM.

Yeah, that would work for us I guess. But at present the videos (not that we have a library of them at this point) are housed in our local work directories. None have been uploaded to youtube for sure. Once we finalise a video (only playing with pilot ones for now) I will suggest that we take your advice.
