My FrameMaker MIF files are translated to Chinese. When I open one of these MIF 10 files in FM 12, several missing font messages appear in the console:
The " " Font is not available.
"Times New Roman" will be used in this session.
The " Italic" Font is not available.
"Times New Roman Italic" will be used in this session.
The " Bold" Font is not available.
"Times New Roman Bold" will be used in this session.
The pages are filled with repeated question marks rather than Chinese characters.
I see Chinese strings in the MIF file (<String `在上例ä¸ï¼Œ' > for example).
The Fonts report (Special > List of > References > Fonts) also does not list the missing font names. Entries like this appear:
@ 10.0 pt 229
@ 9.5 pt 233
How can I find the names of the missing fonts, or is something else going on? The only text showing up in the file is English.

Can you see the names of the font in the MIF file? Look for any of the <FFamily string>, <FPostscriptName string> or <FPlatformName string> tags in a text editor that supports unicode encoding.
The question marks are coming from the FM font substitution, as Times New Roman wouldn't have any of the Chinese glyphs encoded. You could try using the Replace Font pod and substitute another Chinese font to see the translation.

The tags you specified don't include Chinese font names. The strings that should have Chinese fonts have Times New Roman as the font. Some substitution must have taken place when the file was saved as MIF.
Thanks for your answer.

It sounds like the "Remember Missing Font Names" preference was turned off. If this is in the source material that you received from the translator, you'll have to go back to them and have them fix things up.
