Not sure if all the PDF creation methods are ultimately using the same code, but I do know that calling the SaveAs method for a Doc object from scripting is extremely slow. I need the fastest PDF creation method that FrameMaker has to offer, but it should be possible to call it from ExtendScript.
Any suggestions are welcome. And I am sure others will be happy with some positive answers, too.

In the latest version of FM (2022), the Save As PDF & the Publish to PDF routes both use the new PDF engine (& are supposedly faster). The Print to PDF route still uses the older Distiller method.

In my experience Save As is fast for some - mostly small and non complex documents. If you want safe and working every time - Print to PDF. And Microsoft PDF printer is actually both fast and good. Only not for for postscript objects.

Not sure if the Print to PDF option is available to ExtendScript. That would be a requirement for my project.

My thanks to all of you for this useful and informative discussion. I'm the technical advisor to a group of editors and we generate PDFs for each of the books we work on. This gives me a better understanding of the various ways to generate a PDF and the strengths and weaknesses of each. I'll be watching the forum to see if anyone comes up with solution to Print to PDF using ExtendScript.
