Widows and Orphans

I am a newbie and seeking help dealing with widows and orphans in FrameMaker 2020. Can someone point me to easy fixes or a tutorial somewhere?

Hi Donna, welcome to FrameMaker!

Since you're new to Fm, you might like the free learning course available in the lower right corner of the Fm startup screen, or in the WelcomeScreen tab when you have other documents open.

The widow and orphan controls are in the paragraph designer, and can be managed on a per-style basis in the Paragraph Designer , in the Pagination properties. (Ctrl+M is the shortcut for bringing up the Paragraph Designer.)

And make sure your W/O spec is harmonious with the Start, and not just the current paragraph Keeps, but the Keeps for the preceding and succeeding paras.

When FM sees conflicting demands, it can be hard to predict what the layout will do.

And as always, resist managing specific text blocks with overrides, as those are apt to revert on updates and import-format operations.
