Adding variable to TOC listing?

Hey, all

I'm working in a structured document in

I have an issue where I'm trying to add a dash character between SOME of the values in a TOC/index, but not ALL of them.

One thought is to create a system variable in the EDD that I could insert into the TOC/index reference pages.  If there was a value in the variable, it would show up.  If not, it wouldn't.

But I haven't been able to figure out if I CAN insert an EDD-created system variable in the reference pages of the TOC or index, or if there's special formatting I need to do to it.

Any ideas?

Thank you
