This is an old thread, but I am having this problem in 2010. I am working with FrameMaker 8.0p277 (clien'ts requirement) on Windows XP 2002 SP2, and have Acrobat 9.1.2.
I have an index in Frame - created with the "Create Hyperlinks" option, and the links do not work in Frame or in Acrobat. In Frame, CTRL+ALT clicking these links yields an error message that says, "Index Specification." In Acrobat they simply do not work. Other types of links work (TOC and cross ref's).
The Index Specification on the reference page in the index file reads:
Index Specification
openObjectId <$relfilename>:<$ObjectType> <$ObjectId>
I have been using Save as PDF to create the PDF file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Index Specification (link component) looks correct for an unstructured FM one. Is the specification complete?, e.g.

It might just be easier to rename this IX file and then create a new one for the book. You can then import any required paratags, character formats and page layouts from the renamed file.

Thanks for the help. Yes, my index spec. had everything yours did. The lines were in a different order, but I rearranged them. It didn't do any good.
I had also tried creating a new index before, but that also didn't work.
The marker for the page numbers is Hypertext - Index Specification - is that correct?

Gloria, I'm unclear when you say that when you tried creating a new index but that didn't work, do you mean that in the new index there were actual entries created, it's just that they aren't hyperlinked, or do you mean that no entries are created in the index?
As a test, I'd suggest making a brand new chapter with a couple of index entries, new book, new index, and see if things work correctly there. If so, you'd then have a functioning entry and a correct reference page to compare to your problem files.

I'm with Sheila on this. Create a small test file and insert some random Index markers. Then try to create an index using FM's defaults (just make certain that the generate hypertext links option is enabled when creating the IX file). Do the links work in this file?
The order of the lines in the Index flow on the Reference page wouldn't make any difference.
The marker for the page numbers is Hypertext - Index Specification - is that correct?
Is that what you used to insert the Index markers? It should be just a plain Index marker.

Thanks for pushing me to do the test file, which turned out just fine. In comparing the ref. page to the one for the file that did not work, I discovered that the Index Specification in the bad file had the title "Index Specification" above the actual spec., as follows. (The "title" here was defined as ActiveIX paragraph style, too.)

D'oh! As soon as I removed the "title," the index worked as it should. The template was given to me by the co. for which I'm working. That "title" looked so innocuous. Ha!

P.S. (Re: your question - Is that what you used to insert the Index markers? - No. The marker info I gave you is what was showing up in the Index - it was the marker attached to the page numbers.)

FYI, FM tries to interpret any "IX" paratag style that is placed in the Index flow (same applies for other generated file types, TOC, LOR, LOT, etc.). So in this case, FM couldn't understand what the "Index Specification" statement was trying to do as an ActiveIX tag. If you apply a non-IX tag to this (Title, Heading1 or whatever), then FM will ignore it and you can "comment" your IX flow entries accordingly.
