P: Add option to import RAW only

In the Import dialog, there should be an option to skip importing any JPEG files where a matching RAW file exists.

I always leave my camera on shooting JPEG+RAW, since I can easily download pics to my phone and share with others while on the go, but I don't keep those in my computer. Therefore, an easy solution to just skip these files during import would be great.

Currently, the closest process is to either:

  • in the Import dialog, import all files, go to settings, configure to "display jpeg and raw as separate files", remove all JPEG, revert your configuration; OR
  • In the Import dialog, select all images, sort by image type, uncheck all JPEG images, import just the others

Any of these alternatives are cumbersome and not perfect: if you happen to have a picture in JPEG only, not the matching RAW, you risk deleting it by mistake.

Doesn't your camera separate them into different folders?

Another option, outside of LrC, copy the RAW files to your hard drive, then in LrC import via ADD.

Try deselecting Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos. See screen capture LrC Preferences General Tab

Yes, I really would like this, it totally makes sense that I wouldn't want to import JPEGs with the RAWs, but that for other reasons I would like the camera to also record JPEGs. Someone said to uncheck the box in preffs, but that doesn't stop LR importing from the camera card on to the computer HD the jpeg files.

A possibility, corrupt preference file.

see:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

The preference file can get corrupted leading to buggy behavior. A corrupt preference file will survive uninstalls, updates, and upgrades. By renaming or moving or deleting the preference file you create a situation where LrC will recreate a fresh new one upon startup of LrC. Be aware various settings will revert to defaults.

I have never seen an option in cameras I've used (non-mainstream ones by and large) to separate Raw and JPG into separate folders. My own radical solution to the Raw+JPG 'problem' is to simply set the camera to shoot Raw only.

Any time I feel I might have liked a JPG also - but before I will have the ability to use LrC to make one (this is only exceptionally, and only with a few images) I will use the camera menu to process a separate JPG version, from the Raw, 'after the fact'.

If this was going to be a more common thing and for many images, even having shot Raw only: one could use one or another utility to extract, and save to JPG, the embedded previews out of those Raw-only files.

RAW and JPEG separate in camera

Not so much as different folders, but as separate SD cards, slot 1 vs slot 2.

If you use Windows, consider 'Downloader Pro' https://www.breezesys.com/solutions/breeze-downloader/

I have used for years, provides lots of functionality to download what you want, into different folders, name folders, etc. then, as suggested, use 'ADD' when importing in LRc
