What background? There is no background in Illustrator. You might have set up the paper simulation, but that presents you with a simulation of what would happen if you printed on black paper. So if you want a black background, draw a rectangle and fill it with black.

And get rid of that paper simulation.

  1. Select the object to see which Layer it is in (in your Layers panel). Yoiu will see a selection square to the right of the Layer listing that contain the selected object.
  2. Click the disclosure arrow to the left of the Layer listing to reveal all the objects in that Layer. The selected object will have a selection square to the right of the object listing.
  3. Click the listing and drag it upward in the panel above other listing in the Layer or into another Layer above. You can stop dragging when you have an insert point in a higher level in the stacking order of pbjects.
  4. The object will now be on top of other objects it was under before.

Elizabeth,

Or maybe you have the Blending Mode for the collage set to Multiply or another darkening one (the default is Normal) in the Transparency palette.
