Ai file image gets cropped when saved to hard drive

Hi there!

I'm pretty new to Illustrator, so bare with me! I did an image trace for this file and expanded it under the object tab so I could seperate the paths into the individual layers. When I save the file to a "ai" file by clicking "save as", it saves with the image cropped in as seen in the second photo. What am I doing wrong and is there a way to fix this?

Thanks!

If you are saving the file as an Adobe Illustrator .AI document, and not doing anything other than what you described, the save process shouldn't be cropping any objects in the file. Vector-based objects don't behave like they do in Photoshop. It's a more non-destructive process. Vector objects can be destructively cut or cropped. Or the parts that aren't supposed to be visible can be merely clipped, but the parts are still there.
