I hope one day Adobe will accomplish to crate a smooth path to open AI files in PSD and edit the layers . Right now it is convoluted, difficult and gives users that know how to deal with PSD files but not AI files a lot of headaches.

Pretty straightforward as long as you avoid any blend modes or transparency in Illustrator.

You need to export from Illustrator as PSD and use the Write Layers option (and even blend modes and transparency are recognized). The layer organisation may look different in Photoshop.

Thank you. I have the subscription for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Will have to see if I can find a program where I can send the AI files as PSD with layers. I only have from time to time an AI files. Unfortunately many stock sites only give AI files for vectors and not PSD that would be realy useful for those of us that know how to deal with PSD but nor AI/ EPS

Thank you for your input.

Blend modes and transparency in Illustrator can cause layers to merge in order to maintain appearance. If the goal is a 1:1 layer transfer, you want to not use either, then export writing layers. You can always add blend modes and transparency back in Photoshop once you have the layers there, but it's fairly difficult (if not impossible) to "split" layers which have been merged.
