There are a couple of threads describing the combination of MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar) and Illustrator CC (up to the latest version) as incredibly slow, choppy and full of lags when using regular preview-mode (cmd-e) or outline-view (cmd-y); with GPU running as smoothly as could be.
Re: Illustrator + mbPro 2016 Touchbar Incredibly SLOW
In the last 12 months we have been through various versions of macOS, Adobe CC and a whole lot of fresh installations, etc… Right now we are back to speed for the first time ever since, but apparently the current state is not reliable; and we can't figure out what's causing it.
QUESTION:
Can anyone with a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (either 2016 or 2017 model) confirm that Illustrator is indeed working absolutely flawless in all view-modes (being equally fast and butter smooth in regular preview-mode (cmd-e) with or without GPU acceleration, but especially in outline-view (cmd-y) as well?
Thx!
Hi Steffen,
We have posted a beta build on our prerelease forum, which has outline in GPU preview. This would help to tackle performance issues on high resolution monitors. You are welcome to try out the build, and let us know your feedback.
Thanks,
Sarah

There are a couple of threads in Apple's support froum and elsewhere that suggest that this is a slow machine and that Apple even slows it down to prolong batery life:

Have you tried turning off the Touchbar (is that even possible)?

Anything else that runs in the background listening for events that might slow down stuff?

Hi Monika,
Thx for the reply. Just took the time to look through all those links; don't have any of those issues actually, the machine is super smooth and really fast with the latest High Sierra and APFS except for Adobe CC and Illustrator in particular which are still not there yet. Don't mean to figure out the solution here, that's what the other thread is for. Simply trying to get feedback from users running the same configuration.

Hi Steffen,
Can you please submit a bug report to our Uservoice page so the product team can take a closer look into this issue: Adobe Illustrator Feedback

Hi Wren,
Thanks, we appreciate the feedback! We have done that already, of course; but can do so again. This issue is happening fo a year now. There are multiple threads about it and it's not an isolated issue. It's rather difficult to believe that Adobe itself hasn't experienced this yet as it's happening with various configurations/machines.

Thx, Sarah – appreciate that!
We did install the pre-release yesterday and it seems it will FINALLY SOLVE the incredible slowness that Illustrator was exhibiting while using outline-view on high-res internal and external displays (4K, 5K) for the last 18 months! Looking forward to the final release of 23.x!
Just FIY: the redraw-rate for the application-window itself is still slow (though this is not important, of course).
Now go fix PS as well and life will be good again : )
All the best!
