box appears after text create outline

Community Beginner ,

Hi all,

this happened to me a few times. Not alot, but I'm curious and would like to know the cause of it.

• Black colour text ---> Select text, create outline ---> Text changes to path but a black box appears infront and covers the pathed text.

I can guess it has something to do with object fill. But I'm unable to pin point or recreate the issue on a fresh text box to prove it.

Would anyone know of the cause.

The solution is simple, delete the black box and I will see my pathed text, but I'm worried that I may missed it if i'm working on a huge artwork.

If I do miss it and send the artwork to print, I'll be doomed. So best to know that cause and avoid the mistake from happening.

Thank you

I'm not sure how to prevent it happening in the first place, but it can be fixed easily enough, select the text box only (not the type) with the white direct selection tool, the fill will be set to a colour, in you case black, when it should be set as nil/nothing, after changing it to no colour, when outlined it will not create the coloured block.

I tried any ways of creating the text & than outline, but was't able to recreate the issue & never faced such issue in past.

Did you remember the font you used & anything added to the appearance panel.

I've had this issue and a friend finally showed me the solution. The solid boxes appear only if you're outlining "Area Type" or paragraph boxes. The fix is to select any Area Type boxes in your file, and go to Type menu and select "Convert to Point Type" prior to doing the "Create Outlines" step.

I couldn't find that- but it inspired me to choose the offending box and did an "expand" before i did the outlines and it did the trick too. phew. TY!

this worked for me as well, Selecting the offending box and then going to type"Convert to Point Type" option worked but then shifted the spacing of some copy. Easier solution is to change the box color after to resave the OL  but if trying to fix the live version, expand appearance is the quickest way out. re-OL and all good

Has anyone found why this happens in the first place? If the "box color" cannot be seen until outlines are created, how can the problem be "solved" with some of the options listed below in the first place? Any thoughts?

The answer solved this issue for the person asking or someone else and that's why it's marked as solved.

Please show screenshots of what is happening for you. Or better: upload a demo file. You'll need to change the file extension to .pdf
