I have a multi-artboard project that contains a complicated image in multiple places. The image is actually on the artboards, it isn't linked. It has cause the file size to balloon up to 250MB and now handling it is difficult. Requests to do things like move an artboard cause the system to hang and hiding/unhiding and saving all take a very long time.
I did try trashing my preferences but that did nothing.
I'm happy with the current status of the project. Is there some way I can simplify things to reduce the size of the file & make it easier to work?
if the image is used in multiple places, you could try to make it a Symbol and replace the multiple images by that symbol.. If the multiple images have the same size, that would not be a problem, but if they are scaled to different sizes, you could use a script to replace them by a symbol and keep their scale.
When making an image into a symbol, make sure to select the Static Symbol option which will use the image only once, no matter how many times the symbol is used. Dynamic symbols just copy the image, which defeats the purpose.
The level of possible simplifications depends on what kind of objects are inside this document. There can be many various definitions of what a complicated image may be.
Also, there might be other objects apart from the complicated one that could cause at least a part of the issue.
That means it is rather difficult to hand out reasonable advice without seeing the actual file.
