Can't place PNG or JPG in Illustrator

Suddenly I can't place an image into Illustrator, either by dropping in or even opening the image on its own through Illustrator. Getting the message 'The file could not be read due to an error' The only workaround I've found it saving images as TIFF before placing. Any solutions?

Did you already try a restart (your machine, Illustrator)?

If that does not work, try resetting the Preferences.
