Clipboard wacky between Excel and Illustrator

I do a lot of financial publishing work that requires pasting columns of data from Excel into Illustrator's charting feature.  A problem I have had randomly for many years, but seems to get worse with every succeeding update to Illustrator is that it will just start randomly ignoring what is on the clipboard. Things will work normally for a while, but eventually it will start pasting what was on the clipboard previously, rather than what I just cut from Excel.  I know it was cut correctly, because I can paste the new info into InDesign, Word, or any other program, and it will be right.  But if I paste into Illustrator, it is still pasting what was on the clipboard before.

Another problem I see regularly, is it will just start pasting a one line code, instead of the correct column of numbers.

Also sometimes it will paste everything into one cell in the data spreadsheet rather than separate cells as normal.

All of these issues can be fixed be quitting and restarting Illustrator, but its getting so I have to do that quite regulalry, which is quite a hassle when producing 300 page documents.

Anyone have this experience and know what causes it?
