The Ctrl + 7 clipping mask (Windows): as you known, the outline of the image before clipping remains after the clipping.

Now, if I, say, do an Effect/Crop Marks, this is not applied to the visible image, it's applied to the outline of the original image.

How to I get around that?

It turns out that it masks its own crop marks.

Before applying the mask, try applying the crop marks effect to the rectangle, expand appearance and ungroup.

Then you can use the rectangle to make your mask, and the crop marks will remain.
