Colors not being pure - looking like a gray tint to them.

Hi...I have had an ongoing problem (but right now in the gradient tool), where I pick a color - black in particular.  And in the fill box on the tool bar it shows it is black, but on my design it is a slightly "grayed" version of the color.  Have a toggled something I shouldn't have?
