I want to combine all the line segments into one, so I can avoid these cracks? Is that possible?

the simplest way here is to give the strokes round/caps/joins in the stroke palette.

there is no way of making these one path as such.

Søren,

In addition to what Doug said, should you wish to have sharp outer corners you can keep the Butt Caps and Miter Joins and:

1) Select all the outermost paths (only), or Alt/Option+Direct Select them if Grouped;

2) Ctrl/Cmd+J.

That should join all the outer paths into a closed polygon.

There should be no issue with any the inner junctions whether you keep the Butt Cap or use Round Caps.
