Compound path fail?

I keep facing an issue when creating a compound path, here's a specific example;

I have a rectangle path, and an 8 letter word, outlined. 2 letters fail to overlap at random it seems, because if I try expanding the objects alltogether or cleaning them, a different 2 or 3 letters fail to overlap instead.

What are the requirements for the compound path, and what am I missing here?

You can try if this works

In the Attributes panel > Show All

Direct select one of the misbehaving paths and change the direction.

Or use one of the icons to the right and change the winding rule.
