Creating an outline from an actual picture

I am trying to make an outline (for lack of actual term) from a photograph. I want to make an outline of my friend's dog that I can then use to cut vinyl and put on a cup for her for Christmas. I tried doing the image trace and trying out different the different presets and modes and messing with the settings in there but the dog ends up too filled in or without enough distinguishable features. Please enjoy my horrendous attempts.

Try these settings:

You can get much better color by not "Limiting" the palette but I'm guessing you want a limited palette with vinyl.

BTW… I used the "Overlap" shapes option thinking you'll be building this one color over the other. But when I expand it doesn't result in overlapping shapes as I expected. Maybe someone can help you there.
