Creating PDF logos

Contributor ,

For the last 20 odd years I've saved vector logos and brand assets I've created as EPS. But I'm looking to save them now as PDF. I have a few questions:

In Illustrator > I'm going to need to fit the artboard to artwork > save as > Adobe PDF >

Then Adobe PDF Preset > PDF/X-4:2008?

Compression – don't need to consider because the artwork will always be vector

Marks and Bleed – not necassary

Output

This test logo is in CMYK colour mode.

Color conversion - I presume I don't want the PDF to convert or change anything? And for RGB logos I wouldn't want the PDF to convert colors either?

Output Intent Profile Name - that seems to be correct for CMYK FOGRA39 standard

Advanced - nothing to think about or change here.

Security - not necassary

And that's it, or am I missing anything crucial?

Hi @markeeeee,

When creating PDFs, I use the "[Press Quality]" preset. I don't generally need to change anything else. I use this PDF preset for everything from vector logos / brand assets to print products. Hope this helps ☺️

I'll typically use the "Illustrator Default" PDF Preset when sharing files as art assets. "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" is always checked. Essentially the idea is giving someone a PDF that will open like a normal Illustrator file in Adobe Illustrator yet anyone who doesn't have Adobe Illustrator can still view the PDF.

Not everyone uses Adobe Illustrator. Rival graphics applications will open Illustrator AI files or PDFs generated by Illustrator with varying levels of success or failure. It all depends on what sorts of features and effects are baked into the design. If a greater amount of Illustrator-dependent effects are used in a design the less portable the art will be to other applications. If someone requests an art file I'll ask what design software they're using. Depending on the answer it might be necessary to make certain adjustments to the artwork as well as save the file in a certain format (and maybe an older file version of that format).

EPS has its limitations, but the format is still used in variety of workflow situations.
