I am using the latest Illustrator. I just noticed when using Ctrl + - that Illustrator centers the work instead of zooming out a step from where I am working. Is there a setting that changes this behavior?

does it 'fix' what you want if you uncheck 'zoom selection' in the preferences under the 'selection & anchor display' section?
