Diagonal shape and vertical oddly different

Sorry - did not know how to describe this as a title. Can anyone explain to me why when using a grid as a guide to draw a diagonal shape/rectangle and a vertical shape/rectangle, the vertical looks and is wider? I drew my 1" grid. Drew a 2" x 6" vertical rectangle (The length is neither here nor there.) Then using the pen tool and starting at the right lower point of the vertical rectangle I drew a diagonal shape at 45° down, across two squares (2") and back up to the left bottom corner of the vertical shape and across to close the shape of the diagonal. But the diagonal shape is visually thinner than the vertical? Wish I could post a pic here, but no option for that. I don't understand why and had to actually slice off a piece from the vertical shape to get them to match. I'm sure that was not needed, so what did i do wrong? I just don't get it.
Thank you

please, create a screenshot and add it to your message, use the "Add image" button at the top of the message form (look: first Font Styles - B, I etc., then Lists, then Add Image, then Add Video). Otherwice it;s quite difficult to see what's a problem.

I'm not certain that this is what your question is, but it's the best I can figure out from what you've given us.
