Divide Pathfinder

Hello. I want to use the divide pathfinder on a couple of letters and a number. I wrote out the characters and used the line tool. Once I tried to divid this, it said the filter cant produce and I need to select one or more filled paths. I am not totally sure what this mean. I did research and tried using a pen tool instead, but I got the same results. Can someone help me out?

Have you actually converted the font to outlines?

I did not. I am new to Illistrator. How would I do this?

So, you drew the letters and number by hand.  Make sure each letter is a closed path ( apply a fill color and if the fill color extends outside your path, it is open.  If the fill does not extend the path, it is closed ).  Select all > Pathfinder > Divide.  You could also use a font from your font menu, just type the letters and number, select > Type > Create Outlines...then Pathfinder > Divide.
