Equally dividing a line with anchor points

Hello I'm a first time user to Illustration and this is my first task is to place an anchor point equally divided on a straight line for my checkered drawings, please help.

It's kind of a pain using the stock tool set. You can select the straight line using the Direct Selection Tool and then use the Object>Path>Add Anchor Points command. All it does is add one new anchor point centered between selected anchor points on the path. So you have to repeat the command to get roughly the number of points needed (or an excess of points that can be deleted down to the desired number later). Resize the path to fit the grid size.

Astute Graphics' PathScribe plugin makes the process a much faster task. You click the "+" icon in the PathScribe palette. The dialog box will let you numerically enter the number of points needed and give you the option to space the points evenly.
