Fonts make Illustrator 2024 VERY slow *URGENT*

Using fonts like "SF Pro" or "Vintage Culture Regular" or many others, Illustrator does not respond smoothly.

It seems that there are episodes of lag and micro-stuttering that do not allow me to work well.

Despite using a very high-performance desktop computer, I continue to notice frequent slowdowns while using the program...

I would be grateful if you could provide me with indications on how to solve this inconvenience or if an update is planned that can improve the stability of the software.

Hello @MattiaCiullo,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind sharing more details, like the exact version of the OS/Illustrator, the exact name of the font/foundry, and whether Illustrator behaves this way when working with a specific tool/feature, along with a screen recording (if possible) so I can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

It sounds frustrating to experience lag and stuttering in Adobe Illustrator, especially when you're using high-performance hardware and modern fonts like SF Pro or Vintage Culture Regular. These issues can sometimes arise due to a variety of reasons, such as font rendering problems, system configurations, or even software-specific bugs. Below are some steps you can take to help improve Illustrator's performance and minimize lag:

1. Check System Requirements and Update Software

  • Ensure you're running the latest version of Illustrator. Adobe releases updates regularly that address performance issues, including those related to fonts. To check for updates, go to Help > Updates in Illustrator.
  • Check for system updates: Ensure that your operating system and graphic drivers (especially GPU drivers) are fully up-to-date. Performance improvements can come from both OS and driver updates.

2. Font Rendering Issues

Fonts like "SF Pro" and "Vintage Culture Regular" might have particular characteristics (like being heavily stylized or variable fonts) that can cause Illustrator to stutter when rendering them. Here's how to mitigate font-related lag:

  • Use the 'GPU Performance' feature: Ensure that Illustrator is utilizing GPU acceleration. Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > Performance (Mac) and check GPU Performance. This allows Illustrator to use your GPU to render vector art and fonts more smoothly.
  • Disable 'Anti-aliasing' for text: Sometimes, anti-aliasing can cause issues with complex fonts. You can disable it for text rendering by going to Edit > Preferences > Type and checking or unchecking the option for anti-aliasing, depending on your system’s needs.
  • Test with standard fonts: Try using a standard system font like Arial or Times New Roman to check if the lag persists. If Illustrator runs smoothly with basic fonts, it may be a font-rendering issue related to specific fonts.

3. Optimize Illustrator Preferences

  • Increase memory usage: Adjust Illustrator’s memory settings by going to Preferences > Performance and increasing the Memory Usage slider.
  • Optimize clipboard handling: Sometimes the clipboard handling can cause delays. Try turning off Clipboard Handling in the preferences and see if it helps with performance.
  • Disable or reduce live effects and previews: Certain live effects or complex raster previews can also slow Illustrator down. Go to View > Outline or reduce the resolution for previews (e.g., Preferences > Performance > View Cached Data).

4. Font Management and Cache

  • Use a font manager: If you have many fonts installed, it might be helpful to use a third-party font manager to activate and deactivate fonts as needed, reducing the load on the system.
  • Clear font cache: Illustrator and other Adobe programs use a font cache to speed up font rendering, but sometimes it can get corrupted. Clear the font cache by deleting the font cache files. These are located at:
    • Mac: /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts
    • Windows: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Fonts
  • Reset Preferences: If Illustrator continues to behave erratically, resetting preferences might help. Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) while starting Illustrator to reset the preferences to default.

5. Optimize Hardware Usage

  • Use a solid-state drive (SSD): If your fonts and other assets are stored on a traditional hard drive (HDD), consider moving them to an SSD for faster read/write speeds.
  • Reduce the number of open applications: If you're running other memory-intensive applications in parallel with Illustrator, it can slow down performance. Make sure to close any unnecessary programs to free up system resources.
  • Close unused files and layers: Having many files or layers open can also impact performance. Try working with fewer layers or artboards when possible.

6. Illustrator Performance Settings

  • Disable Animated Zoom and Live Edges: Sometimes, these can cause lag in certain systems. Try turning them off in the Performance settings.
  • Use Outline View: When working with detailed designs, you can switch to Outline View (from the View menu) to speed up performance when Illustrator needs to render complex shapes and paths.

7. Consider Font Substitution

If Illustrator continues to struggle with certain fonts, you might want to try substituting those specific fonts with alternatives that are less demanding or simpler for the application to handle.

8. Investigate Background Processes

Check if there are background processes like auto-saving, syncing, or cloud backup that could be interfering with Illustrator’s performance. Turn these off if you're not actively using them.

9. Monitor Resource Usage

Use Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) to monitor system resources (CPU, GPU, memory) while running Illustrator. This can help identify if there is a particular bottleneck when working with specific fonts or operations.

10. File Size and Complexity

If your files are very large or have a lot of intricate paths and effects, Illustrator may naturally experience slowdowns. Try simplifying the file or breaking it into smaller sections for better performance.
