Help - my AI document will not open, it's been discarded due to CMYK policy

I need help - please. My Illustrator document will not open, I get the following message: 

The document's embedded color profile does not match the current cmyk working space. the current cmyk color management policy is to discard profiles that do not match the working space

Please advise how to recover this file, I am an amatuer user but there is so much effort and work invested in the document that now sadly won't open.

That message does not usually prevent opening AI files. It only advises you what is going to happen to the attached colour profile, according to your colour settings. Are you saying that the document does not open if you select 'OK'?

Hi Doug

Rookie error - whenever I selected 'OK' the message flashed and stayed on the screen without opening the file, essentially I would have to select cancel to remove the dialogue box... Ibelieved there was no alternative.

Thank you to your response - I selected 'OK' and then 'do not show this message again' and the file opened...

I wouldn't want the message to not show. It's useful to know what's happening if you experience colour shifts.
