Hidden white silhouette behind black text removal

If I remove the black color from a letter, the silhouette of the letter remains white underneath. Ideally, when doing this, the background should be complete and no silhouette should appear to avoid risk of blurring/leaking in a final print run.
How do we remove this hidden white silhouette? Screen shot attached.

Apparently black isn't set to overprint. You can do that in the Attributes panel . In Illustrator this setting is object based.
