How can I turn an image into a stroke?

I'm trying to figure out how to use an image for a stroke, but can't seem to find anything on this. I would like to use an image stroke as a border for a shape. I'm using the most recent version of illustrator. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Then you can apply a brush to a shape.
