How do I change my lines back to lines and not outlines?

I've been working on a few pieces for ages, using simple lines. When I reopened my saved file to work on it, the lines have somehow been changed to outlines which is going to take me ages to turn back to lines....did I do something and can I change it back in an easier way?

Please help me!

Did you apply any effects?

Any transparency?

What kind of file format did you save?

Exactly which options did you select?

Did you open the file with the exact same version you used when saving?

Where did you save your file?

Any errors when saving or opening?

Did Illustrator crash?

Hi Monika,

I didn't apply any effects or transparency. It's just a normal illustrator file saved as a normal illustrator page. When I opened it up, all of the drawings I had done were set together so any amendments I try to make  were set as an extra layer. There weren't any errors or anything.

it's rather confusing!

Please be more specific as to what exactly you saved and what exactly you see when opening.

The screenshot showa that your files have been converted.

Did you save to a lower version?

Or are these old files that you opened then didn't "Save as"?

A screen shot would help, as there are several ways to interpret this. In the following example, the rectangle has a fill and stroke, but only the outline appears on the artboard. Notice the hollow eyeball for the layer, which means the layer is in Outline mode. Command click it to return to Preview. (Control click the eyeball on Windows.)

That is one possible answer.

Hi there,

Thank you for your reply. Here is a screen shot. The outside diamond shape shows that the lines are outlines instead of just lines. Does that help?

As others have mentioned, it may have happened saving in a legacy format. It could also have happened if saved as pdf with certain settings.

As far as changing the closed paths back into lines, there are several methods that could be used, but all will take some time. Here's one way that you could try:

Select the path and reverse the fill and stroke so that you have a stroke and no fill.

Select one path with the Direct Selection tool.

Cut and Edit > Paste in Place. You should now have two paths that can be selected individually with the black Selection tool.

Select both paths and choose Object > Blend > Make. Then Object > Blend > Expand. That should give you 3 paths.

Ungroup and delete the inside and outside paths which should leave just the center path.

For your pointed paths that are inside the diamond, you could apply a variable width profile (which is probably how you created them in the first place).
