How do I export a selection into AI file so that I would have the same save options as when save as?

You may create a simple action in five steps:

- Edit menu > Copy (the selection)
- File menu > New document
- Edit menu > Paste in Place
- Save as (.ai)
- File menu > Close

Use that action whenever you need it.
