I'm having a lot of trouble simply trying to change the color of a black vector image to white. I've read all related forums telling me to change the color scale to CMYK, use the "recolor artwork" tool etc. NOTHING works. The image refuses to even change shades and just remains solid black. It's not locked, I have no idea what the issue is and it's extremely frustrating. Help!

Can you post a copy of the image so we can see how it looks (and complex it might be)? Are you sure the image is vector-based? Are you able to select individual elements in it or is the image just one overall object?

Use a fake colour, any colour just not black or white. Click a white item, select same fill, change to your fake colour, select a black item, select all, change to white, select your fake colour, select all, change to black. Repeat for strokes if you want to keep them as strokes, if you don't, convert strokes to outline before you start the first process...
